June 6 is the National Day of Sweden. The traditional celebration is… that we don’t celebrate it at all. Well at least we have the day off since 2005 when it was announced a public holiday. But even that was a bummer, because they removed Pentecost Monday as a public holiday at the same time. The tricky thing here is that the holiday they removed always was on a Monday, but the national day can occur on a Saturday or Sunday and won’t give us the extra day off.
But don’t despair. There is an unofficial Swedish national day just 2-3 weeks after the official National Day. A day that we DO celebrate. And it’s always a day off work because it’s always on a Friday (giving the extra time to rest after the celebrations as well).
That day is (as you may already have guessed) Midsummer Eve. If you ever heard crazy stories about Swedish Midsummer, well, then you probably heard the true stories. If you never experienced a Swedish midsummer, it’s highly recommended that you do. So forget about nationalism. Bring on the pickled herring, meatballs, fresh potatoes and snaps. Prepare for singing, dancing and jumping like frogs. This is the true [unofficial] Swedish National Day.
